The explanations of common De Stijl elements presented in this website cannot be applied to every work of art that was made within the movement. The symbolism of each element varies from artist to artist, and some works do not contain any direct symbolism at all. To truly understand the symbolic meanings, one must evaluate each artist and their specific piece of work separately. The effects of the elements on the viewer described in this website, does align with most experiences of De Stijl art. The concepts in which brings all De Stijl works together is their exploration of the elemental use of orthogonals, primaries and neutrals to express the concept of space, perspective and destruction of subject through the elements of line and color.
